I had no plans of becoming the next Da Vinci but thought it would fun to learn the basics of sketching. I enrolled into Drawing Class I, as one of my electives in college this semester. My goal was to earn a simple A, breeze through my classes and enjoy doing my homework assignments while sitting out in the sun, sketching trees and lily pads. Year right!
College Drawing Class is A Lot of Work
By the end of the semester, my drawing class was killing me— it took over my life. I had to spend more time on each homework assignment than that of all my other classes combined. It sapped all of my time, and I could barely keep my grades straight. I survived, got my A, but learned many useful lessons along the way:
- Drawing is not easy
- Think twice before signing up for an elective outside of your major.
- Follow the path of your talents, not the path of someone else’s.
Think Twice About Drawing Class if You Are Not an Artist
My drawing class filled with students who seemed to have no difficulties sketching just about anything with ease and grace. They had talent and natural abilities ingrained in them. They tried to explain how easy it was, but when I mimicked their gestures, nothing more elaborate than stick figures covered my sketch pad and I had to work many long hours to create what took them mere moments.
Slaving over my blank sheets did leave me with my personal masterwork, this drapery (CHALK & CHARCOAL-18″X24″-TEXTURED/TINTED PAPER), but I learned my lesson. Art is no joke.
